Last night at The Screen Actors Guild Awards, two FAB Actresses won awards for their roles in the film, ‘The Help’.

Based off the novel by Kathryn Stockett, it is about African American domestic workers in Missisippi who help a young white woman write a book from the point of view of, ‘The Help’. Set against the civil rights movement, it details the complex relationships between the white families and the maids who are employed by them.

Octavia Spencer won the award for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ for her portrayl of the fiesty Minnie. Viola Davis won for her role as Minnie’s best friend Aibleen, and took home the award for ‘Oustanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Lead Role’. Minnie and Aibleen help the character Miss Skeeter, played by Emma Stone, round up other maids to tell their stories; the good and the bad.

The SAG Awards are said to predict who will win at The Academy Awards, or Oscars, and we wish both these FAB Women the best of luck! We’ll be watching!

January is National Mentoring Month

30 Jan

January is National Mentoring Month!

In our previous post titled ‘A FAB Girl’s Guide to a Great New Year’, we talked about being a leader. We want to develop a new generation of FAB Mentors!

How does one become a mentor, you ask? You could be ‘mentoring’ someone already and don’t even realize it. One definition of a mentor is a senior sponsor or supporter. To put it in FAB Terms, that means someone who is older than you that helps you do something. And that ‘something’ could be as specific as a school assignment, or as broad as how to make decisions in life. If you have younger siblings, chances are you have ‘mentored’ them in some way.

Perhaps you are in Girl Scouts and have worked with younger girls to earn badges. Or you’re a varsity cheerleader and worked with new squad members to help them get comfortable learning the routines and fitting in. That counts, too!

There are a lot of kids who could use someone older than them to help them with school, sports, or just tricky real life situations. A mentor could lend a listening ear or just spend time with them when their parents are busy. The National Mentoring Month website has a list of ways for you to get involved, either now or in the future.

Snow Day Reading from Nini Simone

27 Jan

At FAB Girl headquarters, the temperatures are dropping, and it’s only a matter of time before snow begins to fall and put the city at a stand still. If you find yourself snowed in, or just want a good book to read, we recommend this novel from author Nini Simone.

Teenage Love Affair is an engaging story with beleivable characters and situations. The main character, ZsaZsa, finds herself in a love triangle with two young men. The themes of abuse and dating violence are explored. However, Ms. Simone is able to weave laugh out loud humor in this novel, usually through the character Uncle Shake. We can just picture him delivering his one liners in the eccentric outfits that the author describes.

If you are looking for an entertaining read, we highly recommend ‘Teenage Love Affair’.
