FAB History: Alpha Kappa Alpha

16 Jan

Today is founder’s day for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The organization was founded on January 15, 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. It is the first Greek letter organization for created by African American, college educated women.

The women who founded this sorority were some of the first women of color to attend college, and they wanted to make the most of the opportunity. The sorority still thrives, with famous members including Dr. Mae Jemison, the first black woman to travel to outer space, author Toni Morrison, Kanye West’s mother Donda West, and honorary member and First Lady of The United States Michelle Obama.

Not to mention FAB Girl Editor and founder, Nia J. Stanley!
