11 Apr

We announced that FAB Girl Deidra Shores won 106 and Park‘s ‘Dream Reporter’ contest, which gave her the opportunity to cover The Disney Dreamer’s Academy. The once-in-a-lifetime event gives young people the opportunity to spend four days immersed in motivational workshops, career seminars, and the opportunity to meet celebrities who encourage them to achieve their dreams.

Youngblackstarz.com has a video of her on 106 and Park, talking about her experience. See it here!

FAB, Girl! or Girl, Bye! : Keisha Knight-Pulliams Red Carpet Look

5 Apr

Keisha Knight Pulliam turned up at the Atlanta premiere of ‘Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man’ in this interesting ensemble. While it’s certainly chic and unique, (I’m a rapper, y’all!), is it right for a movie premiere?

Especially when you see this:

Now mind you, Keisha is not a star of the film so she could be a little more casual. But, something about her look just doesn’t seem done to me. I think the top being tied that way is what is off to me. It seems kinda random. But as usual, this isn’t about what I think. What do you think, FAB Ones?

FAB Beauty: Hot Pink Lips

28 Mar

I asked Keisha Ervin to do a guest beauty post for The Fab Girls because she always has really beautiful makeup looks on her Facebook page that are up-to-the-minute, like this hot pink lip. In addition to being a best selling author, she has her own blog, http://www.bowtiesandbarrettes.blogspot.com/ which features beauty, fashion and other fun stuff. Right now, she has a post about outline manicures that I am obsessed with! Continue to see what products she used to create this look, which would be a good look to keep in mind for prom.

Brother of The FAB: Trayvon Martin

27 Mar

It took some time to think about how exactly to honor Trayvon Martin on a blog that is intended for female and black young girls, that talks about fashion, celebrities, beauty, and other FAB women for this young generation to look up to. But every time I look at this haunting image of Trayvon, none of that seems important. All that matters is that I do say something. His eyes seem to be pleading with us, all of us, to make sure his life wasn’t taken in vain.

One of the most popular posts on The Fab Girls is about FAB ballerina Misty Copeland. In that post, I mentioned that I loved everything about ballet except the actual dancing. FAB Woman Making History: Oprah Winfrey

28 Feb

Normally, these posts are started with, “Meet (insert FAB One here)”. But who hasn’t met Oprah Winfrey yet?

A living embodiment of the American Dream, Aunt Oprah has demolished race and gender barriers her whole life. From rising above her troubled childhood, thriving despite being a teen parent (her son died soon after being born)  overcoming drug use, advancing in television despite being FAB in an area and location where being FAB wasn’t considered fabulous, being one of the most generous philanthropists the world has ever seen.

She was the world’s first FAB billionaire, and the first FAB woman to own a television network.

There are many lessons to be learned from her life, and she always has a positive pearl of wisdom to share on her shows and in interviews. She encourages us all to ‘live our best life’, and she lives that motto every day.

Do you love Oprah as much as we do? Tell us about it in the comments!

Snow Day Reading from K.P. Smith

20 Feb

Author K.P. Smith has created a character by the name of Kendra who I’m sure every FAB girl and woman can identify with. The spunky heroine is one of those characters that you can’t help but see a part of yourself in. Because Kendra is so relatable, you will want to keep reading about her life and cheering for her as she navigates the ups and downs of her life.

The story tackles some important themes; family dynamics, friendship, loss, and puppy love. There are laughs with the dialogue Kendra has with her friends and family, and also some drama when there’s fights with friends and tense moments when Kendra and her sister witness the relationship with their mom and dad unravel.

The book is a very easy read, and suitable for middle grade students and up. As an adult, I was very taken in by the story and will be waiting  for the sequel to come out!

More information about the book and author can be found here.
